Hemp beneath the limestone wall
Callosa de Segura sits where the flat huerta ends abruptly against the Sierra de Callosa. Castle ruins and the sanctuary of San Roque occupy the slope above a town whose twentieth-century prosperity grew from hemp, rope and espadrille making.
The municipal hemp museum keeps the tools and working sequences of that trade alive. Above it, the protected sierra preserves archaeology and dry Mediterranean habitats within sight of the irrigated fields.
